In the footsteps of Frida Kahlo
The work of the Mexican surrealist painter Frida Kahlo, who died in 1954, is a great source of inspiration to many designers. Everyone connects in some way to her Mexican colourful and characteristic style. In addition to the fashion world, this inspiring style is seen more and more in interior design as well.
Who is Frida?
In a time in which social media, and portraying yourself on it, have become part and parcel of our daily lives, it can certainly be said that we highly appreciate self-portraits. Frida made countless self-portraits long before mobile phones existed. When polio and a near-fatal bus accident caused Frida to become bedridden, she started painting. A mirror above her bed helped her to paint her own portrait well. In these portraits she displayed herself with a furry upper lip and prominent eyebrows. She had her own unique style and cared little about what others thought of her. And, therefore, never felt pressure to be ‘perfect’. The epitome of a confident woman.
Wallpaper inspiration
Every reason for our studio to develop a collection inspired by her. The result is our ‘Carmen’ collection (named after Frida’s second name, her full name being Magdalena Carmen Frida Kahlo y Calderon). Decorate with wallpaper from this collection and you will soon find yourself in a Mexican atmosphere. Colourful flowers, painted tropical leaves and elegantly winding vines. And there is no shortage of delicate flowers, which seem to have been embroidered onto the wallpaper, leaf appliques, and tile motifs. A collection with a nod to Frida Kahlo’s fascinating work and South America’s folklore. Choose wallpaper from our Carmen collection and add character to your interior.
